Business Whoops!

2010/03/30

The Big Boss wakes up at 2 a.m. with a great idea and announces it to his key staff at 9 a.m. Then it takes 10 years to implement.

Wait a minute! Ten YEARS?

The problem with great ideas is that they “hit” the business, the technology, and the people in wild and wonderful ways, all of which take time to absorb.

The * and the # signs were placed on touch telephones in 1968 — but not because there was a use for them. Telephone manufacturers knew there would be one day, but planned for a 10+ year time lag.

It took 10 years for the Public to get used to seeing the * and # signs before they were asked to use them.

This translates to Slow Change for businesses, a fact of business life that must be respected.

So if the Big Boss has “a great dream one night” be sure he or she understands the impact of it and the likely time to implement.

Hi Mike! Good to hear from you.
Yes, I believe you’re right. We’ve got great application development tools but the “failure in explaining” gets us into trouble time after time. And that includes, as you pointed out, failure to explain through proper training! How many apps get implemented only to sit there untouched because the audience doesn’t quite know what to do with them!
Thanks for reading the posts. I was beginning to wonder if anyone was out there!
